  • I have been here before, and it's just as I remembered it. Came here with my husband, heavily pregnant and wanting pancakes. To be clear, I dislike pancakes. My memories of them are the shake-in-the-container bisquik crap my mother used to make. Hate pancakes. But, wanted good ones, and was in the area. Early weekday morning, so parking wasn't terrible, but still not easy. Dormont is a cramped, busy area with an abundance of metered parking. We were immediately seated, and asked by 3 different servers for our drink orders. Hot coffee was immediately given, and never reached less than half of a cup, even after I said I was done. I ordered the apple cinnamon pancakes and my husband ordered a steak and cheese omelet with homefries. This place boasts its appearance on "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives", and there are articles sprinkling the diner. It is usually always busy, and feels like a traditional diner: small space, bustling, and noisy. There are a lot of locals, but we were not treated any less for not being familiar faces (we are from Pittsburgh, just not Dormont). Food arrived hot, and my pancakes were coated with powdered sugar. I avoid the syrup, as having lived in New England for a number of years, I will only use maple syrup on...anything. I avoided the corn syrupy topping offered on the table, and am not sure if they offer maple syrup as a substitute (should never be a "substitute"!). The cakes are great by themselves, and taste nothing like the buttermilk terrors of my childhood. These are airy, cakey, and some would say, overly sweet--even without the powdered sugar. The cinammon was lost in the breakfast, and the apples were, to the best of my knowledge, not canned. I could only eat about 1.5-2 of the 3 beasts, and snacked on my husband's homefries. As others have commented, the homefries are not uniform diced or shredded potatoes. They are soft, with the right amount of brown from the griddle, and slightly under-salted. They are real potatoes that likely don't come from a freezer. Wish there was a meal where I could maximize my carbs (pancakes, homefries, bacon--you get it). All-in-all, this place is unique in that it can offer pancakes that I will eat, and is a well-known spot for a lot of Pittsburgh residents, certainly those in the South Hill. Television appearance aside, it's still worth a try, but I recommend a weekday morning.
