| - I feel like more people in Champaign should be talking about Farren's. For those who don't know, it's a small restaurant in a space carved out next to the parking garage on Randolph behind Nitaya Thai. It's in a basement, with no windows, a small bar, and a kitchen that is basically open (you generally walk out smelling like the place). It's been around for awhile, but when I tell people it's one of my favorite restaurants, I typically get a lot of blank stares.
Some people do know about it though, because it is not uncommon to wait 15 minutes or so for a table (they do not take reservations). The food is well... American. They are known for their burgers (incredible), but they have great specials that change often. I have had elk and rabbit sausage, venison burgers, and really good cuts of fish. The house salad they usually serve as a side is one of the best around.
They usually have 4 or so good beers on tap, and the place is very laid back. Servers are not assigned tables, so you can just flag down anyone when you want a drink or need your check. Admittedly, I have had some slow service here, but I am not the type of person to get too upset about it. The staff are typically on point and friendly, so I feel like that is how they should be judged.
Really great place overall. I am surprised they have not moved to a larger location, but I am perfectly fine with them staying with what they have. You owe yourself to give it a try.
