  • I've never flown into Canada before (only driven across the border), so I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of customs/immigration. Pearson is the main international airport serving Toronto, and we flew here instead of to the smaller island airport because it was 1) less expensive and 2) we could fly here from ORD, which is much closer to Evanston than Midway. This airport isn't the worst I've experienced, but it's on the dated side and is confusing for first-timers. Arriving was easy, and the baggage claim area was actually quite nice. Leaving was a different story. We arrived around 4:00 for our 6:15 flight to Chicago, and there were already staff at the kiosks. After waiting to check on of our bags, we were redirected to another line for customs. The doors didn't open for at least 20 minutes, but the line built up behind us quite a bit, so I recommend arriving with a solid buffer if you're flying into the US. We had to drop our bag off to get it checked, go through security, and finally go through customs. They have the same kiosks I've seen in the US, so you do not need to fill out that tiny blue form. I had a difficult time scanning my passport, but there was an employee who was able to assist (Pro tip- if your passport won't scan, try holding it above the surface. That did the trick for me). We flew United Express, which is as far as you can possibly get from the check-in area. After you get to gate 80-something, it looks to be as far as you can go. Not so- you need to head down the dark hall, into what is obviously an older building, and continue until you reach the very end, where there is one small seating area for about 15 gates. We actually had to walk on the tarmac to get to our plane! Strange for a large, international airport. Free wifi!
