  • When one mentally visualizes the colours black and yellow certain imagery is bound to come to mind. If you were an NCAA fan in the mid-90's its the whirling dervish of a Point Guard Stephon Marbury donning a black and Yellow Georgia Tech jersey, weaving in and out of traffic to find the open man, spotting up for a jumper or alluding larger defenders as he drove to the basket seemingly willing the ball to drop, which it often did. Or if your more of a contemporary music lover you may associate these colours with the now over played and quite unbearable song made famous by rapper Wiz Khalifa-cleverly named well..."Black and Yellow," titled in reference to the colours of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams. Yet what I associate with these colours are not the Penguins, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets or insidious pop drivel foisted upon us by an artist soon forgotten. It is the infamous Book City awning that comes to mind. I grew up in close proximity to a Book City location and the yellow lights induce a feeling of calm, serenity and security that I cannot explain. I spent many months of my youth in their magazine aisle awash in the latest Bon Appetit or pop culture rag. The staff never pressured you to buy and were all knowledgeable and insightful. This still holds true today. I have found the selection fantastic and the service and attention of staff is second to none. I also appreciate that, unlike neighboring BMV Books they can quickly look up titles and let you know whether they are in-stock. Sounds like a minute detail, yet when pressed for time or not in the mood to navigate a book store( which I rarely am), this is a nice touch. Don't get me wrong I appreciate BMV for what it is, yet the black and yellow lights of Book City will always call me home.
