| - Cockroaches, noisy neighbors who blast music, pool quiet hours that aren't enforced, poor upkeep on the apartment units, and did I mention cockroaches. These are only some of the problems with Martinique Bay. And when i say cockroaches, I mean a lot of cockroaches. Be careful walking outside at night. My review is lengthy, but I wrote it to hopefully help you keep your health. Stay out of Martinique Bay.
My wife and I were unable to tour the property before signing the lease agreement although we requested to do so twice. The best we could do was look through the windows. My wife noticed discoloration on one of the floorboards on the wall connected to the kitchen. We assumed it was from a pet that either peed on the wall or used to sleep leaning against it. I mentioned our concern to the property manager, Cynthia, and was assured that "the apartment will look like new" before we moved in. Move in Friday came and a coat of paint was over the discolored area. The apartment also looked like anything but "new". I will attach the laundry list of repair requests I handed management at the end of this review. One of the initial biggest problems was the pungent smell coming out of the unit's "newly remodeled" kitchen cabinets.
On the following Monday we ran the dishwasher for the first time. When we came home we noticed it had leaked all over the kitchen floor. The next day the discoloration on the wall reappeared. It was then we discovered it was actually mold on the wall, not a dirty spot from the previous renter's pet. After we investigated further we noticed mold stains on the vinyl flooring that ran through the wall housing the dishwasher. The stains also ran to the kitchen cabinet area; explaining the pungent smell. Discovering this mold also explained why my wife and I had severe headaches any time we set foot in our new home for any extended period of time. We talked to Cynthia and voiced our disapproval of this and demanded it be taken care of immediately. Having my wife and 3 year old living in a toxic apartment is unacceptable.
The first step was having one of the maintenance people, Roberto, remove the dishwasher that was leaking. When he pulled it out I looked behind it and saw an incredible amount of black mold built up on the drywall behind it. Roberto turned on a power fan to dry the area which in turn spread mold spores all over my apartment and in our lungs. I turned off the fan after thirty minutes or so because the headache, itchiness, and smell was unbearable. I walked to the leasing office and told Cynthia the parts of the apartment damaged by mold needed to be replaced immediately.
On Wednesday, the maintenance team began its modifications to my apartment. Bear in mind these were the modifications promised to me before I moved in. An additional team, the one responsible for cleaning up the toxic mold, arrived in the afternoon to perform their job. They only removed a small section of the affected drywall. They left a big portion of drywall where mold could still easily be seen. The beams, which also were compromised, were topically cleaned with some bleach. Evidently the staff doesn't realize that mold have roots that cannot be cleaned off porous surfaces with a little bleach. I told them I wanted the beams in the affected area replaced as well as the kitchen cabinets that stunk of mold. This is when all the work stopped. Cynthia said they are unable to do this. My apartment would not be made livable. She then said the company would allow me out of the lease if I would move out. I asked them if they stopped working because they were just going to patch the room up before the next tenant moved in, in which the team answered "yes". This is unbelievable to me. The black mold behind the dishwasher was not removed! Martinique Bay an their parent company (AMC, LLC) would rather save a couple bucks and cross their fingers that thier residents don't die from toxic mold. This disgusts me.
If you are living in Martinique Bay I urge you to look for mold. Look under the sink and behind the dishwasher. Give your apartment a thorough look-over before moving in. Don't let them tell you no. If you can avoid Martinique Bay and any of their parent company's (AMC, LLC) other properties you should do so. Here is a list of repairs needed to my "newly renovated" apartment:
