I liked the atmosphere as it was casual and laid back. The service was friendly and courteous too. The prices were reasonable for a place to eat in Uptown that is not a chain. And I like eating at places that are independently owned small businesses. But the food left me only half impressed.
I had the Southern Fried Chicken Breast with Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas. Unfortunately the Collard Greens was all that I was impressed with. It tasted amazing and topping them with freshly diced onions and tomatoes were a nice touch. But the Fried Chicken and Black Eyed Peas were just EH~. I expected the Fried Chicken to have more flavor. But it didn't. It also tasted too dry and not moist at all. I also expected the Black Eyed Peas to have more flavor or richness to them since they are usually made with bacon or ham hock. But it didn't. And the only thing good about the cornbread, in my opinion, was the honey butter that it came with.
Now I do have to admit it was my first time eating here. And I'm sure there are probably other items on the menu I would have enjoyed just as much as the Collard Greens. But with any restaurant I go to, first impressions matter. My theory is with any good restaurant their entire menu is good no matter what you order, which is what makes me want to go back, make it a favorite destination, and want to keep going back to try EVERYTHING. But I'm going to have to think twice about this place since there was some hits and misses, which is a shame b/c I do love soul food.
