| - I cannot fathom why this place has no reviews yet, because I know it's been around for a long time as I've been walking by it for years. Grace Hair Salon is a a one-stylist (can you guess her name?), no-frills hair salon on the tip of Kensington Market's Augusta Avenue. I needed a quick trim for my hip-length hair and was wandering by and saw that a woman's haircut was $10.
Now.
There have been times that I've gotten a sub-$40 haircut and had immediate regret afterwards, but my hair was crazy long and I was mad to get rid of the frays so I figured why not? Worst case-scenario, I get another hack right after, it's only $10. I've had crummy $150 haircuts, so like, it couldn't be worse than that right.
When I went in there was another lady just starting her haircut. Grace smiled and acknowledged me. She doesn't speak much English but she said "hello, please sit, thank you only 10 minutes." At this point I was like "Oh brother, 10 minutes my foot -- this woman just sat down."
Guys.
Guys. It took 10 minutes. and she left with a STYLED cut. it went from a straight below-the-shoulder thing to a stylish bob. In ten minutes. Grace is not fuckin' around.
After seeing this I decided I'd get a little bolder and ask for a shorter cut. I also wanted a wash and blowdry (The wash+cut+dry is a wallet-burnin' $16, but I was high-rolling that day). She washed my hair twice and conditioned it before moving to the cut. The cut itself really did take about 15 minutes (my hair was l0o0o0o0o0ong lemme tell ya, and I got about a foot hacked off).
I have never had a quicker and more precise haircut in my life. You know how when you ask for a length the stylist cuts about 1.5 inches more than what you asked for? Grace ain't into none of that shit, she knows what to do and she does it well, quickly, and with great precision.
When I was watching her cut my hair I was flipping out because she doesn't get up close to your hair and put it between her fingers the way most stylists do (she does that at the end to fine-tune it though), she just sort of separated into five sections and hacked from what felt like, a 3-4 inch distance. I started to panic when I noticed this because I've never seen anything other than my hair separated into 54 sections cut in great detail and matched to its mirrored strand on the other side compulsively for 45-60 minutes.
the dry took another 10 minutes or so (my hair is super thick, I was shocked).
Basically Grace is amazing and please give her more business. I must warn she doesn't take appointments and it's first-come first serve. But unless she's like dying someone's hair, the processing time between cuts is at most, 25 minutes.
Just a tip for helping her understand what you want for fancier cuts. She really really is a very talented stylist, so if you bring her 2 pictures (one of the front ando ne of the back, if you can) of what you want, she'll emulate it. That's what the woman in front of me had told me. If you just want it shortened, show her using your fingers and I promise you, she will not disappoint you.
TL;DR: $10 haircut is the best cut I've ever gotten. Cash Only. Walk-In. Grace is a demigod. Please tip because seriously bro it's $10 and she is amazing.
