| - We are avid ghost town explorers. We have seen hundreds of historic cities on the West Coast, and this is one of the more well preserved. Some of the buildings are still completely standing, while others have at least a few walls up. I can definitely recommend this place, with some authority, for history buffs, and simple curious tourists alike. This is a great place to explore with your entire family, just be careful when climbing around so the no one gets injured.
I would also strongly recommend serious historians or avid ghost town explorers to spend some significant time exploring the entire area. There are at least 10 other historic mining town sites within a 15 mile radius of Rhyolite.
There are public restrooms available that are in decent shape, but no water or food (except in the nearby town of Beatty), so plan accordingly! The roads are well maintained, and easily accessible with any vehicle.
Spend some time before you go learning the history of this place. There are few signs, and other than the little information available at the nearby museum, there is little at the actual site to tell you about it's history. This is the single reason why the site got 4 and not 5 stars. I'd recommend this trip even for those who live in Las Vegas. It is only a 2 hour drive and being so close to national parks and other sites of interest, there are many reasons to go explore!
