  • Gire Roofing replaced my cedar shake roof in October, 2014, and it was a smooth experience from the start to the finish. I have never used Gire Roofing (GR) or met anyone at the company prior to this job. For bids, I selected three Champaign county roofing companies for quotes based on their online information and seeing their trucks around town. After my initial call to leave my contact information with the receptionist at GR, Mr. Ed Gire called me back in a day, came over, reviewed and measured the current roof while I was at work, and sent me a quote and contract by email. I appreciated that it was not a "floating" estimate, but a contractual, fixed price to do the work. I was offered high-quality, architectural shingles (if you wish to look it up online, mine were Certainteed Landmark shingles; GR may offer other shingles, too, I don't know) and a choice of 30# felt or DiamondDeck underlayment. Included in the itemized quote was the waterproof ice shield (for eaves and valleys), aluminum drip edges, flashing, ridge vent, the works. Then, Mr. Gire came over to answer all questions, showed me shingle samples, gave me copies of work comp and safety insurance, etc. I never felt any sales pressure. We walked around the house together so we were both on the "same page" as to what was to be done. Of the three total bids that I got, Gire Roofing's was slightly less than one company, and considerably less than another company. I went with Gire based on seeing their work on the local elementary school in my town--they do a lot of schools, hotels, city building, etc. Once we had a signed contract, a clear spot in the calendar with good weather was determined, and the Gire team showed up on schedule and worked from 8AM until sunset at 6PM daily, five days total (big roof) until the job was completed. The gentlemen were soft-spoken and dutiful, no cigarettes or loud boom boxes, just hammers and progress. They are extremely hard-working and professional, amazing to watch. They used ropes and safety harnesses to get to some pretty weird angles on my roof, which was impressive. Changing out a roof is like surgery to a house, and to find a team that worked so well together--they were like a well-oiled machine--made a reassuring difference to us. I also liked that GR owns its own dumpsters (to take old shingles) and cranes (to put shingle bundles on the roof) so there is no chance of an outside rental equipment vendor slowing up the process. Everything was followed to the contracted specs, as each day I would take photos and study the work with binoculars. I even called Ed Gire a couple times during the days the team was working, just to ask questions that I hadn't thought of before, and was always provided with answers. Great job! The new roof looks fabulous and makes my home look new. Mr. Gire made a special trip back the day after the work was done just to answer any further questions. He even got out a ladder and went on the roof to check the work and answer something I wished to know about the ridge vent. I received a final invoice for payment, by email, and it was exactly as per our contracted amount. I will certainly update this review if I find leaks, blown shingles, or need for warranty service (lifetime shingles, 20 years labor) but I believe that my roof is the most protective that it has ever been. I'll leave this review on a couple of websites to put a "bug in the ear" of others considering a roofer since, without reviews, it's pretty much word-of-mouth or a stab in the dark. As I said, I have no affiliation with the company other than being a satisfied customer, and I have no reservations about using Gire Roofing in the future. In fact, my next-door neighbor watched the entire process on my house and got a quote from GR the same week my roof was completed. Highly recommended.
