  • Like anywhere else, there are good Drs and some pretty bad Drs. Good ones - Dr Irvin M Cohen and Dr F David Fortiun. Wanted someone to help reduce high lipids and high blood pressure (we had worked with Drs but had not made a lot of progress despite big lifestyle changes). We had to choose a Dr but given no direction, not even what department could help. Choose a complimentary Dr as they were supposed to tie different medical issues together and work with the issues overall. He didn't want to work on it but referred to an ex-Mayo Dr saying choose him as our primary care. We say that Dr for over a year, but the entire time DH blood pressure was over 160. This Dr said no problem and ignored it. Finally went to Dr Irvin Cohen as another Dr in Chandler said that kidney Drs who specialize in high blood pressure are very knowledgeable. Thanks to Dr Cohen's concern, he had an EKG done the first visit because of tachacardia (DH did have wicked PVCs that we already knew about), with instructions not to leave the facility until he had reviewed the results (which was done quickly). The followup a month later Dr Cohen again ordered an EKG for that same day. Afib now showed up (brand new). Referral wasmade to a cardiologist. There was some mixup, we had to call and ask about the appointment as nobody called us and they hadn't made one yet. It took a couple weeks but we saw Dr Fortuin. He did a good workout, including a stress ultrasound and found a valve problem. Did a TEE which didn't take. Since DH felt ok, Fortuin said no surgery at this time (which was nice he didn't rush into something). We go in and get regular ultrasounds to monitor DH's heart and have been happy with the care. Lately we see a PA sometimes instead of Fortuin but she seems good. Fortuin can be hard to get to, often his office figures out how to get us in for an appointment (rather than booking one the regular way). We did see an internist about testosterone - he basically said you are stable and there are no issues, get your primary to prescribe this you are not sick enough to see me. At one point we tried another complimentary Dr, he said ridiculous things like don't exercise hard at all like you are, just do a 10 min walk first thing in the morning to clear your head. He said having a water bottle with you is junk, don't drink water, only sometimes when you are eating a meal and want to drink something also. [Hello, we live in a desert where it gets over 110 in the summer.]. He said don't take your blood pressure regularly, just take it once every 3 months, that is when the Dr takes it so that is when you should take it. We dumped him quickly. We did use the ER once and were very happy with their care, nothing extra like Chandler Dignity Care does (doing tons of unnecessary tests then kicking you out at day 4 when you are still struggling to breath and walk and should have been in the hospital another day or so until breathing and walking was ok). They seemed to approach the problem thoughtfully and actually stopped to consider if a hospital stay was needed or it was ok to go home with massive antibiotics (they erred on the safe side and turned out it was needed). We have had the problem others have of someone just making an appointment and sending the information in the mail. We have not had billing problems with them. Nope we are not rich, just regular people with fairly good private insurance (through work).
