  • I'm only giving my review a 2 instead of a 1 because of the awesome dental hygienist named Melinda. She's does a great job and is a very nice person. I used to go to Sunwest Dental for years. Then, they got sold around 2 years ago and my favorite dentist moved to open his own practice and didn't take my insurance. Boo. Some of the employees moved over to Tempe Smiles. So, that's how I got here, along with my daughter. I do not like most of the front desk staff as they are rude and could care less. The dentist I was assigned to (and whom I had only seen for check-ups before, and no actual work) was Dr. Shah. While he is pleasant, I think he's a bad dentist. My young adult daughter went to him and they filled 7 fillings in her mouth all in one day. She was so numb all over and the doofus was asking her if her fillings felt level. She said as far as she could tell at the moment. Well, once the novacaine wore off, she had problems. The fillings were too high and causing pain. She refused to have Dr. Shah touch her, so we asked for another dentist. The other dentist wasn't too happy about having to help her. Maybe he wasn't getting paid for it. She got it fixed, although the other dentist was just so rude to both of us. I'm only still going to Tempe Smiles because of Melinda. Once I need actual dental work from a dentist, I'm outta there. I had a problem with one of my teeth in the evening, so I called the answering service, hoping to talk to whichever dentist was on-call. Surprise!! No dentist is on call. They just want you to think there is. I was told by the woman who answered the phone (who probably has no dental field experience, because it sounded like she was reading off a cue card) to swish with warm, salt water and rinse, and call the next morning. I asked if a dentist talks to people who call the answering service. She said, normally, no. Occasionally, if the patient had a problem related to a procedure that day, the dentist *may* speak to them. I find that ridiculous. Dentists charge so much money these days and many of us have limited or no dental coverage and have to pay out of pocket. Then, we can't even talk to a dentist in the event of an after-hours emergency. That is not acceptable to me. And, I am shopping for a new and improved dental office, complete with a pleasant staff and competent dentist.
