A friend was at Valley for a biopsy of his liver. While waiting, the doctor came in and said that a traditional biopsy could not be done, that he had advanced stage pancreatic and liver cancer and that he was being discharged that day. No mention of hospice and no case manager. The doctor also said that he had to get a biopsy to have hospice. The discharge plan that was given was "physical therapy, occupational therapy, follow up with primary care physician." My friend died 12 days later, last night. Yes, he had hospice. No, he did not have to get a biopsy. There was absolutely no compassion or support. If Valley spent a little less on PR and a little more on patient advocates, they would have a much better reputation.
