  • I have used this Storage West facility for several years, and until late 2012 was thrilled with the service and convenience. It is very clean and the managers live on site and are very nice people. Recently, the company attempted to implement what amounted to a force placed insurance on their customers if they did not show proof of insurance. Yes, they are a business and have cash flow concerns, but forcing your customers to buy insurance from you is not a good policy. I think they have backed off this plan as I don't think they can legally force customers to buy insurance from them. Even if they could, I doubt negotiating with Storage West over a damage claim would be better than dealing with your insurance company. They are always going to act in their best interest and not yours. Under those circumstances, I think I'd rather deal with my reputable insurance company when submitting a claim. Storage West is now selling an "enhanced" lease which gives you additional "benefits." I would still rather deal with my insurance company than buy $10 a month insurance from Storage West. My renter's insurance covers my storage unit, but you should check with your insurance company to see what's covered. Also, if you pay late, you will get socked with fees and Arizona law allows them to dispose of your stuff if you are 30 days or more late. Be sure you read and understand the fees and your storage lease before you move your stuff into any storage unit. Finally, don't count on getting any advance notice from Storage West if your credit card expires or if they are unable to charge it for any reason. Many businesses have an option to manage your own account online and will give you notices when your card is about to expire. To my knowledge, Storage West does not give you any online options for account management or to pay online. They will, however, call you when your payment is three weeks late, but by that time, you've probably already been charged $20 in late fees.
