  • I lived in San Marquis for two years. To be honest, I would give my overall stay three stars. But because my moveout left a bad taste in my mouth I'm giving two stars. The good: This community is relatively quiet (emphasis on relatively because I heard my neighbor below me EVERY day and dogs barking EVERY day). I never heard parties or loud music so that was a plus. It was also relatively clean. The community did a very good job of making it look nice despite a lot of lazy young students leaving their trash wherever they felt like it. The gym was nice, and so was the pool. The bad: They have a terrible air freshener that permeates the office, gym and clubhouse. It smells so strong and so bad that I stopped going to the gym. Honestly I don't know how the office employees can stand it all day, and I wouldn't be surprised if they went home feeling sick. It's extremely unhealthy to breathe in those chemical scents all day long. This complex seems to be ASU's choice for exchange students. Maybe some would find that a plus, but personally I didn't want to live in a community with so many students. Valet waste. This is a service that picks up your trash at your door. You set your trash out from 6 to 8pm, and someone comes and takes it for you. Again, some people might find this to be a plus. For me the issue was twofold. One, it's $30 per month, and you can't opt out. I'd rather take out my own trash. Two, my neighbors never understood the schedule and would leave their trash can/trash sitting outside for three days straight or more. You can imagine how this might smell during an Arizona summer. I spent almost the entirety of my stay trying to get this problem fixed, and it took almost the whole two years to get it addressed. For the amount I paid to live here, I found this situation extremely frustrating and would have appreciated some sort of compensation to make up for what I experienced. The computers NEVER worked. Trying to print something out was a huge pain to the point where I stopped going in there as well. There was no gate code, and the phone service part never worked. When I asked them why there wasn't a gate code they said it was a security thing, but I have been in many other Mark Taylor communities that do have a code so that answer doesn't really make sense. Wouldn't this be a company wide policy? Anyway, this was very annoying whenever I had a visitor or ordered pizza, etc. Finally, my move out: I went to to the office to ask questions about my moveout. I spoke with an employee I knew, and after giving me the instructions she asked where I was moving. She also asked what I was paying, and after I told her she told me to "be careful" because they get you with specials and then raise your rent tremendously. Well guess what that's what happened to me at this community, so I know how it works. I felt the question about what I was paying was intrusive, and I didn't appreciate her comment about my new rent payment. Obviously I already signed a new lease, so what was the point of saying that? It seemed salty, unnecessary and none of her business. I left my apartment SPOTLESS and turned my keys into their dropbox as instructed. A few days later, I notice a missed call from them with no voicemail. I start to worry and wonder why they are calling. I called, and she asks me if I returned my keys. I told her yes of course I put them in the dropbox on my moveout day. She told me David (their maintenance manager) had TRIPLE checked, and my keys weren't there. I'm like ok, well I put them there and now am wondering if someone stole them or they lost them or if I'm going to be charged? Then she tells me she SAW me putting them in there, and well they've had problems with things getting stuck in there before. Then she said someone would call me the next morning after they check again? I asked if she could please check now because I was concerned, and she told me maintenance had to do it and they were gone. Of course no one called me the next morning shocking. So I called in the afternoon, and oh guess what they were in there. I'm not sure why I had to be called at all since she SAW me place them in the box, and since they've had problems before with items getting stuck in their dropbox. Why was I called??? Then a few days later I stopped by there to check my mail. I spoke with Kate their assistant manager just to make sure everything was fine with my move out. She had the snarkiest attitude, and basically told me David wasn't going to charge me for any cleaning issues and that they weren't going to charge me for the keys (WHY WOULD THEY?!) as if they were doing me some favor and almost as if she was disappointed they couldn't find something to charge me on. Then on Friday I received my final water bill by mail with 10 days to pay. I planned to pay it this week, and today (1 business day later) their collections dept called AND emailed me about my bill. Really? WTF.
