| - I distinctly remember coming to the zoo once in my childhood, with Hungarian Scouts (yes, there is such a thing!) After that, I don't think I came to the zoo, ever, until maybe four years back. I love zoos, I love cute little animals, but it wasn't till my most recent visit I realized why my parents never brought me here. So four years ago the tickets I had to the zoo were given out through my work, so it was free. When I went last year my friend has a free pass in so she gave it to me. These last two experiences gave me fuzzy warm feelings about the zoo, then when I went two weeks ago, and realized it was $70 for three entries and parking, I understood why my parents avoided the zoo in our childhood: It is bloody expensive!
Beyond that, the zoo is a good attraction in Calgary to see. The penguin plunge is particularly enjoyable, but standing in line for 45 minutes to only get to spend 15 inside kind of sucks. All the other attractions are really interesting, and although there are some really interesting animals, sometimes I wonder why certain ones aren't there (such as polar bears). Depending on how much you want to see/do, I think the whole zoo can be checked out in about five hours (unless the line to the penguins is long), and if you spend all day at the zoo you can go home happy that you got a pretty good breezy cardio work out!
