| - Hiking is one of my fitness loves. I'm super passionate about it and can't wait for it to become spring/autumn so that I can hit the trails and be reminded how crazy out of shape I am! :D
That being said, I never really gave the hiking at Mt. Charleston a chance until recently, with the exception of Mary Jane Falls a few years ago. Since it just hit autumn and Vegas/Moapa weather is still in the 90+ zone, I decided to hike at Mount Charleston, where it's about 15 degrees cooler.
Fletcher Canyon is a GREAT trail. The website totes it as intermediate, and honestly, unless you are going deep within the trail, it could be counted as a beginner friendly trail. I applied sunscreen thinking, "Yeah, I usually needed it." But not on this trail. A lot of it is covered by pines and various other trees, so shade is plentiful. Yay!
The beginning of the trail is super easy. It's a steady hardly noticeable incline that makes its way back between two mountain cliffs. If you like gawking at pretty trees, being at awe by nature, and want a nice stroll, I recommend this trail. It's also near the beginning of Mt. Charleston, so it's super easy to get too. Double yay!
The last 1/4 of the trail is when things get a wee bit more difficult. The inclines start to feel like, well, inclines, and at some areas, rock scrambling is needed. All of these things are worth it for the amazing experience that awaits you. The "Canyon" is real, and it's gorgeous. The temperature drops another 5-10 degrees when you are in the back of the trail, between two breathtaking cliffs. To put it in perspective, it was about 75 degrees when we went hiking. At the end of the trail, it was probably 60. I honestly felt like I needed a jacket. Sadness.
At the end of the trail, or at least I think it's the end, is a rock that has been shaped by rain water. It is probably the smoothest rock I have felt or witnessed and the others around it are the same. It's a wonderful play to lay/sit down and bask in the glory of quietness and nature.
I imagine going there during the spring would be a WORLD of difference, as it seems that there are creeks that run along the trail a majority of the ways. :)
All and all. I recommend it.If you're out of shape, just go back until it becomes a big boy trail. If not, keep going all the way back into the canyon. The views and the feeling of astonishment are worth it.
