| - One of my biggest pet peeves with restaurants is a lack of effort on the chef's part; like, they're having a bad night or whatever and they decide to just phone it in and deliver a truly subpar meal. So when I receive a dish that looks like some (or a lot) of effort was put into it, I can't help but take notice.
I wasn't expecting much from Grace O'Malley's given the less-than-glowing reviews here, and also it's a pub; nobody expects much from a pub.
Color me surprised, then, to have received what was one of the best meals I'd had in a while. I decided to order the Guinness Steak Pie, which I can't describe since it's not listed on the website. Anyway, the pie is accompanied by a generous serving of mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables (and a small jug of gravy).
First of all, the presentation was spot on. This was not a hastily assembled plate, clearly. And everything was prepared surprisingly well; the steak pie was piping hot and boasted a flaky pastry, the mashed potatoes contained little chunks of potato (which I love), and the veggies were cooked perfectly (ie they were neither too hard nor too soggy). The gravy was quite tasty, too.
All that plus $4 Happy-Hour pints? I'm in love.
