| - At long last, I'm finally writing a review for Hanny's. I don't even want to count how many times I've visited over the past (almost) two years...
I had actually never been there until a certain someone took me by to show me "the basement." Strange, yes, but we stopped by real quick and checked out the interesting physical features Hanny's has to show off. If you haven't been downstairs, go check it out ;) The bathrooms are cool too, of course, and I believe they used to be fitting rooms back when it was a department store. Very cool use of the spaces in the building. The elevator shaft is cool too, if you're not scared of heights!
That first visit was an interesting one. At first glance, this place seems way too classy for me. Since we didn't grab anything to eat or drink the first few times we stopped by, I had no idea what the food/drink side of things was like (seriously, we just stopped in to show different people the basement and the restrooms... we're weird, maybe, but who cares? It's such a cool space!) I had assumed the standard upscale cocktails and plates most places that look and sound like Hanny's offer.
The LED lighting was interesting, at least, and the layout of the bar/dining area was pretty cool. The fascinating seating/couches they have in some loungier areas were also cool touches. I honestly didn't know I'd love this place as much as I ended up loving it when I finally ate there. By the way, the booth seating reclines. I scared myself the first time I leaned back ;)
When I finally did go there to grab a bite to eat, I was surprised by the prices. Everything on the menu is reasonably priced and sized. The flatbreads are quite large, as are the salads. The fried onion appetizer is also massive. We order the small -- so delicious! -- and it's enough for 4 people and then some. I don't want to know what the large is like. Seriously, though, those salads are also massive. For a nice place like this, the prices are absolutely fantastic.
I need to also dedicate an entire novel to the flatbreads. I've since brought dozens of people here, and most of them agree with me -- the margarita pizza flatbread is incredible. It's that sauce. It must be. There must be something special in there... because we're all addicted now. I will lie in bed at night thinking about that pizza. I wake up craving it. What do they do!? :) The other flatbreads are also delicious, but 9 times out of 10 I'll order the margarita. The veggie is also a solid choice. It has loads and loads of delicious veggies on it, and I've even shared it with some people who generally hate veggie pizzas. They end up enjoying this one! :)
This is also one of the few places (Bitter & Twisted may be the only other legit option) I'll order a martini. Their all-day $5 martinis are absolutely amazing. Such a great price, too. I expect a disgusting, watered down martini for that price, but they do not skimp on the gin (or vodka, I guess, if you go that route ;) They also put delicious olives in there. The good stuff! Usually, you can also request blue cheese stuffed olives too. Yum! I usually don't like martinis, but they're pretty great here! Most of the time, I'll stick to beer. Their other cocktails are great, too, and they also serve the only aviation I've ever enjoyed. Highly recommended! (Thanks to a great coworker and friend who recommended this one to me!)
The service is also always fantastic. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and the service is generally fast and efficient. No complaints here at all. Every waiter we visit there has done an admirable job. They're probably sick of seeing us so often, but that's okay ;)
By the way, the small details are what really make this place one of my favorites. Many of the original design details from the department store are still there, and they're really cool to gaze at while hanging out. I also love how the DJ pops up later in the evening -- they have this space above the entrance, likely where the dept. store manager's office used to be (?); what at one moment looks like a solid wall suddenly becomes an open space. A panel is opened (or removed?) and suddenly you can see the DJ and his entire setup in that space above the door. It's pretty cool! I want to catch them setting up. There is so much going on, usually, that I always miss the transition. One second, it's a wall; the next, it's a DJ! :P
I will say, though, that sometimes the lighting can be a bit intense (or too dim), and the music can sometimes get a little loud. It's a fun place, and it's generally pretty chill and relaxed, but sometimes the music can make you feel like you're at a night club. Most of the time, it's great music -- very diverse! I often hear lots of songs I love that I'm not used to hearing in public spaces, which is a bonus :) Just... sometimes I wish they'd turn the volume down a bit. Otherwise, 10/10 would eat there again. And again. And again... forever.
