  • I've been going to this park since I was a tiny tot and came with my mom to play on the swings, sandboxes, slides and monkey bars. All of which have been long demolished as aging liability risks today (the slide was WAY high, the swings flew many feet off the concrete, a kid could totally fall off the monkey bars and break his neck, etc.) but lots of fun while they lasted. Later there were school outings here, all of us with our little vinyl lunchboxen, eating in the big pavilion or on the lawn, and playing softball on the handy diamond. Still later when I was old enough to go to the park by myself I used to hang over the fence and look at the Cleveland skyline and dream of the life I'd have in the big city as a grownup. And many hours sitting on those gliders that look out on the lake, watching geese and boats and bunnies, and having heart to hearts with my mom and with various Others who were Significant enough to be invited there. Of course there were Lakewood Days and Fourth of Julys every year when the park turned into a carnival for a little while. I never got into using the pool because I couldn't swim till I was an adult, but a lot of my friends went all the time. Some things have changed over the decades; the playground equipment has been replaced several times (getting wimpier each time in my opinion - the poor kids today don't know what they're missing), the Cleveland skyline has added several new skyscrapers, a refreshment stand has periodically been opened and closed down, the access path to the lake itself was finally improved so you can go down to the water, and on my last visit, I noticed a population of black squirrels had joined the brown ones. But it's still the same old Lakewood Park and I'm always happy when I'm able to spend some quiet time here. It's quite busy and safe and a swell place for families of all ages. I'm happy it's been preserved all these years and hope it stays around for a long time to come.
