I went through two exhibits at the Levine Museum of the New South, the permanent history of the South (and Charlotte) since the Civil War and the Know Justice, Know Peace temporary exhibit. The museum is a beautiful venue, and the permanent exhibit is amazingly informative and has lots of physical objects, many you can touch. Notably they have cotton at various stages of production, each you can feel. The Know Justice, Know Peace exhibit was detailed as well; it covered the events leading up and surrounding the protests in Charlotte in 2016.
All in all this is a 5-star museum, but one has to be careful in planning a day around visiting the Levine Museum of the New South. We attempted to visit the museum at around 3 pm one day and it was closed for a private event when the usual closing hour was 5 pm. It did not indicate this on their website and it was very unfortunate to arrive just to be turned away. Make sure you call ahead!
