  • VIP Theatres: Pleasantly surprised I went to see X-Men here. Having been to the VIP theatres at Varsity 1-2 years ago, I was expecting a mediocre experience. The seats at Varsity were a lot older and the screens were tiny. Well, fast forward to Monday night. I'm itching to see X-Men and I have a choice between going to see the show in a VIP theatre close by or walking my lazy self over to Scotiabank Theatres to see it there. My laziness wins and I decide to take a chance to go to the VIP theatres. Cineplex touts its VIP theatres as a 19+ "Adults-only refinement." It's a lot more expensive than the usual seating you get, at $19.99 a ticket. So what do you get for a ticket that costs more than an Imax seat? You get a licensed lounge, in-theatre ordering, no kids, "fancier" food options and better seats. Oh and this theatre also has special washrooms for VIP goers. Walking into the VIP theatres is like going into a club. You have to show your ticket stub going in again. Once you're in, there's a lounge with a lot of seating and a bar for ordering drinks. There's cocktails, beers and wine. I can't remember all the prices but a draft beer is $6.50 for domestic, $7.50 or so for Steamwhistle and I believe Rickards. They had Stella as well for I believe a dollar more. Caesars are $7.50. We didn't order food. Well we tried to order Edamame but we were told they didn't have it anymore (whether it's permanent or not is unknown). Theatre-wise, the screens are decently sized. They don't feel too small like the ones at Varsity and they're clearly not as big as the ones in the Imax theatre. I would say it's a pretty standard-sized non-AVX/Imax screen. The seats themselves are comfy and can recline a bit. The middle armrest can go up if you want and the outside armrests can pull out to act as a table. It might be tricky to figure out the table part so ask the server. Despite being a premium service, there's still 15 minutes of trailers before the movie (which is a pro or con depending I guess). There aren't ads and there's no playtime for those wondering. The night we went, there were some drunk people in the audience yelling things at the screen. Who knows whether this is related to the serving of alcohol at the theatre. Ultimately, it has to be making Cineplex a buttload of money. Everyone ordered drinks and food in the theatre. I'll probably use the service again once in a while, but I still prefer Imax.
