| - I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirror Room exhibit at a the AGO. Even as a long time AGO member, getting these tickets was a trick.
I have tried many times to see the show in LA but shows were permanently sold out and I did not feel like lining up the night before to get one of the few daily tickets, so expectations were high.
There weren't as many people as I had expected. I even heard one of the volunteers commenting that things were quieter than normal. This was a good sign, more time to enjoy.
Well that thought was quickly extinguished by an extremely rude volunteer managing the line. I mean really, calm down and chill. The fact that I spent an extra second to read the info card on the wall and didn't close the gap in the line immediately, wasn't going to change anyones life especially considering how long we had to wait to get into each room.
And here is the reason for the one star review.
This an immersive art installation. You need time to settle in, focus and become one with the room to really appreciate it. 20 seconds isn't even enough time for my eyes to adjust or my brain to process what is going on around me.
Be prepared to wait 20 to 30 minute for a 20-30 second glimpse. I can not believe this is the way the artist intended for someone to view her creation. Not to mention all the rules, repeated at the entrance to each room. Go in quickly, do not walk backwards, watch your head, no flash, no coats, no bags, dump them in this here box on the floor and get out immediately when we knock on the door then rush to the next room and line up again for 20 to 30 minutes, repeat 6 times.
The best room was the very last, the Narcissus Garden. It was on the far side of the gallery, away from the rest of the exhibit. No line up, no people, big space and you could stay as long as you wanted as long as you stayed 1 metre away from the silver balls. 4 stars for sure.
This is nothing more than an overhyped ( thank social media for this) money grab.
Why not restrict the number of people and allow them to take their time to appreciate the art , at least a minute or two!!
Do not get me wrong, the art is interesting and the premise thought provoking , but execution was awful. I had a better "infinity mirror" experience in the hallway, outside our room, in the Royal York hotel.
Go if you must, be one of the cool people that can brag about how they saw the exhibit but be prepared to be disappointed and possibly ostracized from the cool people group for admitting you did not like it.
The AGO has done far better , the Andy Warhol exhibit for example. Same era, same hype but executed in a much more thoughtful manner which made it a totally memorable 5 star show.
