  • Well it's sad to say, but McAdenville is NOT Christmas Town USA dealing with all the traffic congestion and inconsiderate drivers. Three hour wait to creep into McAdenville with all the A-holes who cant queue up in the right lane only to blaze past and blatantly cut in line and dare you to hit them - what a way to show Christmas spirit by being a jerk and turning in front of all those who patiently waited in traffic! As a native of Charlotte, I've done the tours for 15+ years with my wife & daughters and have made it part of our Christmas tradition to ride through McAdenville. As many have noted, it's the same displays that once inspired and greeted Christmastime - now it's just seems lame and a waste of time. Too much hype for all the stress it causes trying to make your way through, hoping you get there before the town curfew and the lights get turned off (mill town mentality) and whoever heard of turning off the lights at 9:30pm on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day?... You would think the town that bills itself as Christmas town would have invested in some infrastructure to handle the thousands of cars that parade through their streets - and now they're building more houses/apartments that you'll have to compete with... and where are the police to direct and detour cars?... must have been hanging out at the Burger King or Hardees on either side of the town - definitely not worth the aggravation dealing with all the road jerks and those who cant even turn off their headlights as they snake the couple of miles through the town. Just like Bedford Falls of the past, this tradition has come and gone - it's a mill town heritage and persona that has outgrown the capacity of visitors it promotes to attract. So long to the joy of Christmas going through to see the lights and decorations... and I can only hope other nearby towns (Mt. Holly?) figure out they have a better chance at being deemed "Christmas Town" if they really wanted to ... but again, who wants to invite and fight all that traffic day in and day out... do yourself a favor, take the money you'd waste on gas waiting in traffic and buy your own Christmas lights and start a tradition in your own neighborhood! With all this said, once you do get into McAdenville, it is a nice leisurely ride to see the lights and decorations and people strolling around. For that I will give it 2 stars instead of one. If you've never done this trip, pack patience and forgiveness for those drivers who cant obey common courtesy and by all means, turn off your headlights when you enter the town - just be sure to turn them back on when you leave! By the way, the Jerk Award goes to the driver of the Party Bus that cut in front of line and everyone waiting - way to be a Super Arsehole! The runner up is the Zion Church Van driver who must have been on a mission from God himself to ride past everyone to break in line and shove their way into the turn lane at the last second. FYI: I'm not cynical nor a scrooge - I embrace the reason for the season but thanks to the onslaught of heavy traffic and inconsiderate and idiot drivers, the thrill is gone. Maybe someone in McAdenville (Steve Rankin & company) will read this post and realize if you're going to promote yourself as Christmas Town, you need to control the influx of visitors who spend considerable time and money to visit their village (maybe charge for a shuttle service/park and ride) only to get frustrated with volume of cars that congest both west/south bound roadways and create a traffic.nightmare! But hey, maybe they're going for Halloween Town next (good luck with that Jack the Pumpkin King!)
