I visited the Monongahela Incline last fall with family who live in the area. Prior to our visit I had read about the inclines while doing research, so I really wanted to check one out. The Monongahela Incline was fantastic! I can't compare it to any others, as this was my only Pittsburgh incline experience, but it was phenomenal.
As it turns out, the Monongahela Incline is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the United States. In case you're wondering what the heck a funicular is, it's a pair of vehicles which are pulled on a slope by a cable which loops over a pulley wheel at the upper end of a track. While one vehicle is ascending the other one is descending and thus they are counterbalancing each other. It's super neat!
The views are totally worth any wait you have to ride the incline to the top. We were lucky and only had to wait in line a few moments to be loaded into a car and taken up the slope. You can see the entire city once you're at the top and you can get beautiful photographs.
There are also lots of shops at the top on Shiloh Street. We walked around, explored the area, and checked out some of those shops. It was a lovely afternoon. But I kept coming back to those views! They beat any shopping, eating, or drinking to be had at the top.
If you're in Pittsburgh definitely make it a point to check out one of the inclines! If you're not married to the idea of any one specific one I think the Monongahela is great! I would definitely recommend it!
