| - If I were reviewing for myself I would give the zoo four stars, but I am also writing for my blind, wheelchair-bound sister who accompanied me. I really liked the zoo and I thought the exhibits were very well-done and impressive. My sister, on the other hand, wasn't able to get much out of it. I realize that going to the zoo is an activity primarily for sighted people, but it would be nice if there were more blind-friendly activities. The Kids Kingdom was nice as there was the opportunity to touch some animals, but not all of those exhibits were very wheelchair friendly. For instance, the double door into the goat pen was a very tight space for a wheelchair and a person to push it. Also, if you're operating a wheelchair (or stroller for that matter), be prepared for some very steep hills.
Important tip: if you buy tickets at your local Giant Eagle you can get a discount. Also, the food is ridiculously expensive (e.g., $3 for a 20 oz bottle of water), so it's best to bring your own snacks (although check the zoo webpage for the guidelines for what you can and can't bring).
