| - Had brunch at The Asbury on Saturday afternoon. Shared Maw Maw's Cast Iron Biscuits, Deviled Eggs, and Chicken In A Biscuit.
Quality
The Asbury was widely touted as one of the best restaurants in Charlotte, so I was very excited to visit. And while I saw the potential, I was not overly impressed with their brunch. We started with Maw Maw's Cast Iron Biscuits, which I did not enjoy at all. Four large biscuits served with butter, berry jam, and bourbon bacon jam. And while the bourbon bacon jam was rich and tasty, it was not enough to make up for the dried out biscuits. Lathered in butter and jam I still struggled to consume them. Next was the Deviled Eggs, which on this morning came with bacon and blue cheese. I felt blue cheese was the wrong choice as the harsh flavor overwhelmed the bite. With blue cheese it takes a very delicate hand and I believe they completely overdid it. The Chicken In A Biscuit however went a long way towards winning me back. Wonderful moist chicken, perfectly fried, served on a biscuit with a fried egg on top and doused in cheese sauce. The runny yoke and sauce helped improve the biscuit and the combination of items just worked great.
Quantity
We did not order a ton of food, but it was more than enough for the two of us to share. Maw Maw's Cast Iron Biscuits are quite filling as is the Chicken In A Biscuit.
Value
The brunch menu was extremely affordable with only one item costing more than $14 and that was a platter made for four.
Ambiance
The Asbury is located in the Dunhill Hotel in the Uptown area of Charlotte. The space itself is small and simple. With about a dozen tables it creates for an intimate experience. It has a lot of traditional style elements, likely inspired by the hotel it is found in. The walls have an assortment of paintings, but otherwise the space is pretty empty. They do share a bar with the hotel, which was being used as a Bloody Mary station during brunch. This lobby or lounge area had a lot of character.
Crowd
On a holiday weekend with lots of other activities going on, including a Nascar rally, the restaurant was practically empty. There was one other small group and two more customers walked in just as we were leaving. The staff mentioned multiple times it was strange for the restaurant to be that empty for brunch. So despite the appearance on this afternoon, it seems that reservations are encouraged.
Service
The staff was very friendly and they had our food out quickly. They also knew how to keep the appropriate distance, which sometimes is tough when a restaurant is quiet.
Parking
We walked over from our hotel, but the parking situation did not seem simple. There was no street parking so you would need to find a lot or garage nearby.
Extra
The Asbury did not live up to my lofty expectations, but was serviceable for brunch. If I had longer in the city, I would have loved to see their dinner offerings, but I personally would not go out of my way for their brunch again.
