I'm not a majorly huge fan of contemporary art, but I do enjoy the artistry and the thought-provoking artwork that comes along with it. Definitely a hit or miss depending on the artist.
I cannot believe this afternoon was my first time at MOCCA, perhaps because the building is a little setback from Queen Street, although the MOCCA sign was definitely visible on the building and especially with the placard on the sidewalk....how did I miss it before?
MOCCA was free, but operates on a donation system where you pay what you can and the suggested amount was $5, which was great pricing for the amazingly interesting artwork that awaited inside.
The exhibit space was a decent size compared to other galleries in the area. Plus there were two smaller rooms at the back that showcased a couple more artists. There was definitely plenty to see to keep the eyes alert and the mind thinking while you visualized the significance of the artwork. Side head tilt may help for those who are unsure or want to look like a professional curator.
The artist currently on display is Douglas Coupland, a Canadian novelist, visual artist and designer. You may remember him from his installations at Nuit Blanche a couple years ago. A definite must see if you're in the Queen & Shaw area, but hurry as the exhibit is only on display at MOCCA until April 19.
Furthermore, Coupland's artwork is also exhibited at the ROM until April 26, so check it out.
