| - Looks like I'm in the minority, in that I really enjoy the Taco Festival. I have attended three years in a row, all on Saturdays, and I've never had too terrible of an experience. Each time, however, I have had VIP tickets, which comes with 5 tokens (so never had to stand in token line) and 6 drinks in the VIP tent (beers/margaritas/water bottles). We've always arrived around the time the festival has opened, and haven't waited in the entry line for more than 10 minutes. If you arrive at that time, there are hardly any lines inside, for tacos or for tokens.
Once inside, there's plenty of tacos and a few other types food to choose from. Interestingly, they have a lot of shave ice stations, which doesn't seem very taco-y, but whatever. I think they should have more places to sit and eat, but again, if you're there early, you can usually find or share a table. In the Tequila Tent, you get to try about 10 small shots of tequila. We usually taste a few, go get a taco or two, chill in the VIP area (where there's chairs and shade), then go back for more tequila. The later you go (usually closes at 5) the more chaotic it gets.
Overall, I would say that if you can afford it, go for VIP tickets. If not, pre-purchase your tickets, show up early, and enjoy the minimal crowds. Also, if participating in the Tequila Tent, make sure you have a DD or use Uber. :)
