  • On a sunny Saturday I was looking for a place to have tea. This place is in a sketchy neighbourhood but came up several times with these adorable pictures of tea cups and scones. How can anyone resist a grandma style teapot?!. Well done cat and teddy. First, finding the door was hard enough because it's so tiny. it could've easily been missed but the window is good for reassurance - just don't start leering too long because people who are inside are sitting by the window - I suggest do the casual "it's all cool I just needed a quick glance, I know my longitude and latitude". The door is all white with a picture of a spoon - super cute. I like the name too. Kitten and Bear - who knew these two could get along. Also, having camped out permanently in suburbia (as in farmlands with pregnant 25yr old wives and gardening clubs) there's a look of acceptance I get when I recommend this place to my fellow gardening club and preggo house wives. Not that they would ever travel to the city but for the ones that secretly do, it's a place they can feel a little less out of place against the variety of hipsters, the sea-salt kelp and avocado sunflower seeds hemp dress making tousled hair repunzels and sober-clean looking Amy Whinehouse's that come with perfect black eye-liner and city experienced richness. Just saying. Because I was planning to walk to High Park after, I stopped in and right away the lady at the front (very pretty sober Amy Whinehouse type. ) asked if I had ever been there before and upon my 'nooooo' she started the pitch. I liked her, very cute. I also liked that she wore sky blue pants and a cardigan with well kept short black hair and cheeks that made her look like she was smiling all the time. Unlike most places she was very friendly and patient when I changed my tea twice. I believe her husband was in the kitchen area right behind her (remember, very small place) making the scones and such. Since there is only 2 tables they don't do reservations and the menu is on a chalk wall right above the cash register which is also the tea cup and spoon station. Considering the size of the place, shelves and walls are well utilized without looking crowded. The Persian Palace tea was what I ended up with and LOVED it!.How much? Days later I kept saying , 'shoulda smuggled a tin'. The tea they carry is from SLOANE which is a terrific Tea company that have high quality tea and Canadian so Huzza!. I think the Persian Palace tea had cardamom and rose because those are my favourite ingredients for tea so I instantly recognized it. I would highly recommend it for Persians looking to feel nostalgic of back home. There was already a couple sitting at the window seat so the only option was the other table and chair. The sampler is a fantastic idea because the jams are all seasonal so you wont get the same thing all the time - which marketing wise is great strategy! you build loyalty that way. Also, the kind of ingredients they use in the jams is interesting. So I will definitely be back. Unsure of what to get? - no problem, try a small sampler then keep adding for a $1 of whatever you want. The scones aren't amazing (only the people who have actually had proper scones will notice) but they are big so you wont need more than 1 per person. Plus, it's really a jam place so by that measurement the jams are wonderful. They serve the jams in a tiny set of bouillon bowls that work perfectly for sharing and if you like one jam specifically you can always add it or buy it at the store. Expect the cost to be around $25-35 for 2 people which isnt bad as It's more filling than you think. So after all these fantastic pro's why only 3 stars? A)Once we finished the 3 samplers of jam and clotted cream, we got another scone and wanted to try the butter and another jam to finish the scone but then a few customers came in and the lady was cheery like she was with us so I understand that she couldn't get back to us - unfortunately it was a while and I couldn't order anything else. When a place is THAT small you can't just be a jerk and sits with a half eaten now cold scone. When I noticed that the new customers clearly wanted to sit I offered our seats and said we were done. Sigh. :( but....the butter. B) Before we got our scones we asked if we could wash our hands and the lady mentioned she didn't have a wash-room (but .....there is a sink..). Supporting hygiene speaks volumes of a business. To not have a wash room and not offer a wetnap is a huge negative. Thank goodness I travel with sanitizer. I understand that in the city spacing is an issue so as a suggestion why not offer hot towels?. They already offer adorable cloth napkins per person so why not offer another one on the side to clean hands? All you really need is to dip the tiny squares in hot water with lemon and viola! - a small step in keeping clean fingers. .....Cause' nobody is eating scones with a fork. xoxo M.
