| - Alright, so it should be known that on my stay at the MGM Grand I had one of those "moments" that don't apply to everyone. You know, the one star reviews you read because someone had some specifically odd situation that led to problems and an eventual ranting on their Yelp business page, but it's probably something that wouldn't necessarily apply to you "moments." Want to know more? Read on. Otherwise, just know the MGM Grand is a pretty decent Vegas hotel.
Still with me? Okay, maybe the MGM Grand is relatively prestigious. They sure emanate that feeling throughout the casino, bars, hotel rooms, and restaurants. It's not pretentious, but rather contemporarily classy. This was partly why MGM was chosen as a place of residency for a quick Vegas trip I took with my family.
Throughout the stay, we encountered mostly-friendly employees and no big dilemmas (except the one). Well, we did have to ask a few times to get extra towels, but the place is huge so I'll cut them a little slack on that. It's big enough to be a stop on the Vegas monorail which worked out wonderfully for me in leisurely getting down to the Stratosphere. Oh and the pool? Woah. Massively-sized with multiple spots to chill (including a formidable lazy river). Don't forget the clubs (Wet Republic by day and Hakkasan by night) which might just add to the fact that you'll never want to sleep in Vegas (in a good way, I think).
All that is fine and dandy, and would've resulted in a four star review, had it not been for the following mishap. We booked our stay through a travel site and chose to take a red eye flight home, but instead of checking out in the morning on that final day, we wanted to pay for that last night (even though we'd be out of the room by 10PM) just so we would have a place to go to rest up and relax until it was time to depart to the airport.
When we checked in, everything was under my name and we reexplained the situation to the friendly employee at the front desk. She noted it and didn't say we needed to do anything else...only problem was that last day, around the late afternoon, my family was locked out of our room. None of the keys worked and they called me unsure what to do. I was several hotels away from MGM so I called up only to hit a roadblock of a person on the phone that stated there was nothing she could do to help me over the phone and I needed to be there in person to update the info so they could be let in. At this point I was calmly furious and explained how nothing was said to us about any of this possibly happening and someone should've informed us at the front desk or to at least have someone else's name on the room so there wasn't a problem. Somehow, after going through this all a few times, the woman was miraculously allowed to let my family in as long as I answered a few security questions. Wow. Really?
I finally headed back and went to the front desk to explain how this was a ridiculous way to end a vacation and the woman who helped me was incredibly empathetic and understanding. She was able to get her manager to knock off some money for that final night and lower the room rate (I mean, we weren't actually staying over so that made some sense). But the damage had still been done and it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth for MGM.
Overall, like I said, this isn't an instance or situation that usually (or maybe ever) happens to people, but it happened and from that, MGM Grand loses a star. I may be back in Vegas in a year or so for a bachelor's party, and despite a mostly positive stay, MGM Grand might not be my first choice. Then again, if we book things normally, perhaps we'll get lucky (Vegas joke) and things will go smoothly.
