  • New to the area and had out-of-state company to entertain. Found this place by searching for cheap and free things to do online. So glad I did! I called for information only to find out that 2 of the 3 phone numbers tell you to call other numbers for info. The phone number for the Ranger's Station got me to a live person right away despite other messages saying it could be 3 days before hearing back. Best to call (602) 262-7393 for info. We did the scenic driving tour which is free. I liked that it was easy to find my way to the Park without being all that familiar with the area. Take Central Ave South from I-10 until you end up in the park. Easy enough. The ranger told me just to say on the main road and that would get me to the top and (with only one fork in the road--go left) it did. Several breath-taking views on the way up and different ones on the way down. Be sure to take your camera, beware of loose gravel and some broken glass and spend sometime just sitting at the summit. The day I went was cloudy and breezy and that made the visit absolutely perfect for people who aren't used to the hot summer temps of AZ. Not too crowded and plenty of space to enjoy the sights without being disturbed by the other visitors. There were several park benches at the top, rocks to sit on and a couple of picnic tables if you want to bring a picnic lunch. It took us about 30 minutes to drive up to the top since we stopped at some of the look-outs, we stayed for over an hour at the top and then drove down. Very relaxing to stop and take it all in. Highly recommended. There are restroom facilities and drink machines at the base of the mountain. If you have kids, I'd suggest stopping before you go up since I don't recall seeing any facilities at all at the top or on the way.
