| - I am not one to shell out big bucks for fancy desserts, but if i were to shell out big bucks for fancy desserts, it would be at Ruelo.
Is "big bucks" an exaggeration for the pricing here? It depends on the item. The macarons are under $3, which is fairly standard. Like the price, I find the macarons to be nothing exceptional. The green tea sesame has a great balance of flavours and sweetness, but a number of them were too sweet for my taste.
On to the cakes. Paying $30 for a 5" cake would only be justified in my accounts for very special occasions. But the cakes are so darn good that I am always excited every time one of those very special occasions approaches.
All the cakes here are fantastic. I usually don't delve into lengthy description of my food, but Ruelo compels me to. I absolutely love how each cake has a dominant flavour, yet within each cake, there are multiple layers of different complementing flavours and textures. The attention to detail required is evident, and this attention to detail has fantastic results. There is no excessive use of sugar. The mousse is light and airy, as is the thin layer of sponge cake. The chocolate is rich and bold, without being overly heavy. The pralines found in most of the cakes are a fun contrast to the mousse. The cakes also stay intact, so you can really sample all the layers at once.
Personal favourites include the Ruelo, Chocolate Hazelnut and last but not least, the Green Tea Red Bean Sesame. The Green Tea Red Bean Sesame deserves special mention for the amazingly delicious layer of crispy black sesame sandwiched amongst layers of chocolate mousse, green tea mousse, mild red bean paste and a delicate vanilla sponge.
The location is small, which isn't an inconvenience for pick-up, but I wouldn't come here with a large party.
