  • Just finished the Arizona Hot Springs/White Rock loop. There are some excellent and helpful reviews on here for this hike. I think we kind of went the backwards way.. but it worked out ok. We started out on the AZ hot springs side and hiked down into the canyon with varied rock scrambles until we reached the hot springs. Once we reached the hot springs we hung out a little and hopped around the springs. The first one is super hot... and right when you think you can't take any more, you come to the next one and it's slightly less hot. The last one is just about perfect. i'm not one for sitting around soaking especially when I know there's another hike in my future so we kept it moving. There's also another small area sectioned off with sand bags. A bunch of teenage boys were monopolizing the whole thing so we skipped it. In order to continue the loop the next step is to take the 20 ft ladder down. That ladder is no joke. We found that climbing down was scary, but as long as you could get both feet on the 2nd or lower rung... you would feel more confident. The ladder is surprisingly sturdy, but it's still pretty terrifying trying to get over that first rung. t think climbing up the ladder is probably a little easier, but I'll have to save that for another day. Next up was a short rocky jaunt out to the river. Water is freezing but it's so rewarding to put your feet in the ice cold water. We stopped here to have lunch, then we looped around and came out on the White rock trail. It looks like theres some spots for cliff jumping if that's your thing... no one in our group was willing to brave the ice cold water. I wore my hiking shoes and brought a second pair of water hike shoes and I was very happy to have a dry pair to put back on after we got through the water. Best $40 I've spent in a while! There's some light to moderate scrambling as you go up and down the mountain on the way out. Then you come out onto the White Rock trail, this was tougher for us because of the soft sandy path for pretty much the whole trek. I ran some of it and felt as though I was barely moving. There are some slight scrambles that help move it along. We had a large group of ten. This hike was definitely the busiest hike I've been on in a while. There were other hikers coming and going nonstop. Lot's of campsites set up near the river and people spread out throughout the hike. Obviously a less populated hike would be ideal, but word has definitely gotten out about the hot springs. The walk out of White Rock is pretty tough for the only fact that it is all that sandy soft sand, but the hike itself is so rewarding that it's worth braving the minor issues. Great Hike and we will most definitely do it again. I think I'd like to try it in reverse next time. Although hiking up and out of the canyon with all the rock scrambles sounds a little daunting too. This hike definitely requires extra water. We brought our small dog because she's super easy to carry if needed... but that ladder could cause issues for dogs. We lowered her down with a rope. Our GPS tracked us at 8.5 miles for about 5 hours.
