| - Okay, so obviously I was going to be predisposed to like this, as a huge Baz Luhrmann fan (although my favorite is Strictly Ballroom), and a huge music enthusiast in general, who is just the right age to be familiar with all of these songs. But I am also a super jaded local who has been generally underwhelmed by shows here overall. So I wasn't really sure what to expect here, and the somewhat slow and clunky beginning did not give me confidence.
But ultimately I found BAZ to be just super fun and definitely worth a discounted ticket price. The singers are very good. There are no super boring interludes with clowns or performance art, like so many other shows. The show is actually sexier than some of the "sexy shows" I've seen. If you're familiar with all 3 movies (The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, and Romeo & Juliet), then you will really enjoy how they managed to interweave the story and songs and put a new spin on them. I got a thrill off the one Strictly Ballroom song in there, and I can understand why they didn't incorporate that one, it's the only one without a tragic ending and is generally more light in tone, while the other three are classic tragedies. Some of the sequences in the show were really just perfect.
I would have probably given the show 4 stars though, because the singers, much like the stories, ultimately fail to harmonize with each other. They are superb alone, and then tend to jangle against each other, or drown in chaos, when combined. I feel like this is something that could have been refined with practice, or maybe adjustments in the sound equipment. But the sidecar I ordered was the best one I've ever had, so that definitely deserves a 5th star. ;)
Even if you haven't seen anything of Luhrmann's, you could still the enjoy the show for the music and dancing, honestly most other shows don't have a clear and cohesive storyline either. My husband has only seen one of the movies once and went with me mostly to be nice, but he said he would also give this 4 stars and enjoyed it.
This is my first show in the Palazzo theatre and I really like this venue a lot, it's hard to have a truly bad seat (although I would avoid the extreme sides and back), the temperature was comfortable and not freezing, the bench I sat on (middle section) was comfortable for the whole show, and I wasn't crushed up on other people. For this show, the actors are constantly moving around almost the entire seating section, so no matter where you are, you get to see at least some close-up action. For this reason, I personally wouldn't want to sit super up front.
