| - I met a colleague at this new little coffee house in her neighborhood. I have to say, it was refreshing to see such a place pop up. It felt a little out of place, like a shop you would find in Ohio City or Tremont, but certainly not Old Brooklyn. But I don't live in the area so maybe that's just my understanding of the community/culture in the area? I should also note I visited during their "soft open". After July 7 they will have a larger menu, patio seating and drive through.
The decor was really impressive. There is lots of repurposed furniture (a long reupholstered church bench), vintage seating, lots of industrial touches like iron tables. The space is pretty open. They could probably jam in some more places to sit, even though they don't really need more seating options. To contribute to the vibes, they sell art (Cleveland prints and T-shirt's) and vinyl records.
Had I enjoyed my beverage experience more Metropolitan Coffee would have been a solid 5 stars. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I asked about a few menu items and ultimately settled on a dirty chai latte. When I asked about their non-dairy milk options I was told they offer Rice Milk and Flax milk.
What...?
Okay, that was strange to me. No almond, soy or even coconut milk? A simple visit to their website explained it all--they are a nut-free establishment. I guess that would be a really great thing if my husband were with me, since he has a nut allergy. But no one explained that to me in the moment. I decided to go with dairy.
I didn't like my dirty chai latte. It had no distinguishable chai flavor to me... just the flavor of artificial coffee syrup (which wasn't even remotely chai spice). Confusing. I tried to go with it, but I just couldn't. I took it back to the counter and asked for an unsweetened latte instead, which they provided without issue. The latte wasn't bad, but that's all I remember about it.
A few more things to consider:
They had a few baked goods in their case, some Chobani yogurts and chocolate bars. I didn't try anything but they all looked good.
The WiFi password is #notstarbucks. Okay, that's hilarious. Witty AF.
They prominently display that all the bathrooms are gender neutral. Yelp! Always seems to want to know about that so... here they are!
