  • On 3/25/15 I visited the Durango/Flamingo UCExtra for a standard STD blood and Urine testing panel. After waiting over an hour for admittance I was taken in by a young African American male nurse, who while pleasant, it was apparent that he was very new to nursing. After a series of basic questions I was shown the bathroom and was told to fill a specimen cup and place it in the collection door. When I returned to the room I was asked to sit in an extremely awkward and uncomfortable sofa style chair and asked to extend my arm on his knee to achieve an angle to draw blood. The nurse was EXTREMELY shaky with the needle, and his lack of training coupled with the improper equipment/apparatus added to his difficulties in efficiently and safely drawing my blood. The nurse made 1 attempt in my left arm (center fold), and was unable to hit the vein. He then made a second attempt in my right arm (inside fold), which was also unsuccessful. He then made a third attempt on the back of my left arm (outside fold), and also could not hit the vein. At this time I requested a doctor as I had now been at the facility for 1hr 45min, had three (3) needle sticks and no blood drawn. A second male nurse (Sasha) entered and appeared to be much more confident. He brought an adjustable metal tray and asked me to place my arm on the tray for an optimal angle. Sasha made an attempt in my right arm (outside fold), but also was unsuccessful in hitting the vein. He then made a second attempt in my left arm (inside fold), but was unable to draw blood here either. He then made a third attempt in my left arm (center fold) and finally hit the vein, allowing two vials to fill with blood. **This is a total of 6 needle sticks between the two nurses before a successful blood extraction commenced. After the blood was successfully taken I re-confirmed the all tests that I expected to be performed in the full bold panel I requested at time of check-in and when I spoke to the first nurse. Sasha left the room to 'double-check' and returned to tell me he needed to collect one (1) additional vial. He then made one more attempt in my right arm (center fold), unsuccessfully. He then said he was not going to stick me again and explained that they would attempt to run all requested tests with the two (2) vials of blood collected. Only after the entire ordeal, when I had a question regarding blood testing and treatment was I finally visited by Dr. Johnston. As I mentioned I had a sore throat he offered to treat me with an antibiotic shot, and antibiotic prescription. I declined. I left the facility having been stuck seven (7) times with a needle. I was told results would be ready in 3-5 days and if I had not heard from anyone by Sun 3/29 to call. I called on 3/29 at 12pm and spoke with (Sam) and was told that the tests had not been performed because the specimen was "mis-labeled" and that I would need to return to give an additional sample, not indicating which tests were not performed or what sample needed to be collected. I called back shortly after and asked additional questions, this time Sam discovered that I only needed to provide the urine specimen and that he was in possession of blood test results, however, he only had the results of one (1) of the blood tests to be performed and that he would contact Sasha by phone to find the additional results by the time I arrived at the facility (approx. 1hr later). Upon arrival I provided the additional urine specimen, and asked Sam for the test results that he did have, and he showed me a piece of paper with one blood screening result on it. He then called (Sasha) and handed me the desk phone. I asked Sasha why all tests were not complete and results not given and Sasha stated that all results were present and asked to speak with Sam again. Sam then hung up the phone AND TURNED THE PIECE OF PAPER OVER, revealing the missing results of the full blood panel on the back side of the same piece of paper. There is a complete lack of competency, supervision and proper training at this facility. This was by far the WORST and most disappointing medical experience of my life. **I sought a second opinion at a different facility on 4/2. At this facility, the lab technician hit my vein on the first (1st) attempt. I was also told by the technician at the second facility that medical personnel are required by law to turn over the patient to a new medical professional after two (2) unsuccessful needle sticks. The first nurse at UCExtra made three (3) attempts before 'I' requested a new medical professional. The second nurse at UCExtra offered to send me to Quest Diagnostic after his failed second attempt, however I was unaware of my rights as a patient and naively allowed the additional two (2) attempts. I find the procedures and training at UCExtra unacceptable. I would not recommend (facility name) to anyone for bloodwork and will not be returning in the future.
