The hostel is actually a set of row houses rather than a single address. This meant that the kitchen and common rooms were actually in a different building than our dorm room. Personally I liked this feature. I've had issues in other hostels where you can hear the festivities going on in the common room long into the night. Having it in a complete separate place made this a non-issue.
My friend and I stayed in the "private" room which consisted of a bunk bed (with a double bed on the bottom for couples), a small set of drawers, and a chair. There wasn't anything particularly exciting about it but it was clean and the bed was surprisingly comfortable for a hostel.
The heat was a bit tough to regulate in this particular room. Hot air would be blasting through the vents so much that we would have to open a window to cool things down, but being that this was the middle of winter, the room would cool off very quickly. We would then have to shut the windows and start the process all over again. Regardless, too much heat in winter is always better than too little.
Bathrooms are shared among everyone staying on a particular floor, two of which have showers. I never had an issue getting a shower when I wanted to use one. I also really liked that these were separate rooms rather than a single shared shower space with stalls. They were kept clean every morning.
The only part of this hostel that really put me off was the kitchen. It is in the basement of the main building at the end of a small, winding hallway. The ceilings in the kitchen are fairly low and the ventilation is terrible. It felt very claustrophobic. The four fridges for visitor use are way too full and there isn't very much space to do anything. The part that bugged me the most was the lack of cleaning supplies made available. Aside from some dish soap and disgusting sponges, there was nothing else. At the very least some cleaning rags and paper towel should be supplied (there also aren't paper towels in any of the bathrooms).
Aside from the kitchen, I enjoyed my stay here and would definitely consider the Canadiana Backpackers Inn the next time I'm in Toronto.
