  • I have super curly, thick, mixed-African hair with a few different textures. My grandmother used to call me a "bush giant" when she saw me coming with my hair out. I usually wear my hair pulled back in a ponytail when I don't have it hot-pressed straight and I didn't really have high hopes for a miracle going into this salon. When they told me I'd leave with a curly style (not pulled back, not straightened) I just nodded thinking "sure sure, whatever, you people haven't seen the crazy carnival that is my hair" and brought my hair elastics and brush with me in my bag. I was just going in for a good trim with the full intention of going back to my regular salon shortly afterward to get it pressed straight. When the receptionist adamantly told me they were going to cut my hair dry, I almost cancelled the appointment, because I know my hair, and there's no way anyone can see all of it enough to trim those split-ends, much less comb it out, when it is dry. Fortunately the person who did my hair (Angela) REALLY KNOWS her stuff, and she LOVES curly hair. Yeah. That was the other thing. If you have curly hair like mine, you probably know how hard it is to find someone in town who wants to deal with your natural hair. I was really happy with my experience with Angela. So of course, she washed and detangled my hair first, with the utmost tender-loving care, THEN we got rid of those split ends while the hair was still wet and the curl-ends clearly visible. After drying, I had the option for a dry-shaping of the hair -- which made sense at this point in the procedure. (The receptionist hadn't made it clear that my hair would be rinsed and de-tangled first. She made it sound like it would just be combed out and cut, and then styled with moisture.) Angela explained everything she was doing all through the process and gave me little tips for detangling and styling all the way through - and in the end I left with a really nice curly-do that I enjoy wearing.
