We normally have rented from Hertz but this time we thought we'd check out price and try Avis. Online a standard SUV is described as a Ford Escape or similar. I wonder what the chance would be of really getting a Ford Escape. However, the vehicle was fine and did the trick.
The original rental period was 2 days but turned in less than 24 hours so obviously expected a one day rate. Fuel was refilled just before returning so the SUV was FULL. Even though it was full and receipt was in hand, there was still a charge for $13.99 on the rental fee (along with 2 days rent). Evidently this fee is charged on all vehicles driven less than 75 miles whether or not it was refilled. In order to get this refunded a trip to the Customer Service desk and standing in line is required. I wonder how many folks don't bother because they'd probably miss their flight.
So, after complaining to the Avis clerk and asking for a reversal of the fueling fee, a new receipt was issued (supposedly) before catching the bus to the airport. It was then the receipt was checked and discovered it was someone else's receipt and there was no fuel credit on it and the 2-day charge wasn't reversed.
Another couple days and another complaint to Avis via a "how'd we do email" before a correction was made to the credit card used for this rental . So, the charge is still about $8 more than what it should be. It's a little extra profit for Avis and in the long run they lose. We'll never rent from Avis again. It's back to Hertz.
