  • When you walk into a CrossFit box (which is what the CrossFit community calls their gym facilities) and everyone is hugging and loving on each other, it's a far cry from the usual intimidating stereotype that you hear about. That's exactly what I walked into when I was checking out FreeStyle CrossFit. This box has to get a lot of drop-ins from out of towners. They are right downtown and super easy to get to. I happen to be a new local and am on the hunt for my new box. I was welcomed right away and signed in. I met the coach/owner for the Saturday class and shown where to put my stuff, bathrooms, etc. The space itself is small. Very simple, garage style gym. The movements were broken down before the workout and I felt like I was in great hands with the members and coach. I just moved to the area and I'm not used to the heat. Towards the end of the workout (which was a partner WOD: workout of the day) I actually had to sit down because the heat was getting to me and my vision was blurring. Instead of pushing me to keep going, I was encouraged to sit in front of the fan and drink more water. That says a lot about what type of community and support this gym offers. I'm still checking out a few other spots, so event if FreeStyle CrossFit doesn't become my new home, they certainly will see me back for a drop-in now and then.
