If you want to get a taste of Charlotte history, Levine Museum of the New South is the place to begin. They offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month and you'll find free parking directly next door at the 7th Street Market parking building (make sure to bring your ticket for validation). The first floor of the museum houses their established collection, a tour from the farming/cotton land of Charlotte to the industrial/banking system. It's beautifully laid out with a short introduction video and full size replicas to take you through the history. They have hands on activities to entertain and educate both children and adults alike. I'd say to plan for 30-45 minutes on the main exhibit on the bottom floor. They have additional rotating exhibits upstairs as well. Do note, no food or drinks allowed.
