  • I'm not sure if they've changed something since the other reviews, or we just caught them on a good night, but after reading the other comments, we went in with very low expectations--and the only reason we went was because we had a Groupon. I found the decor on the flamboyant end of pleasant, and rather liked the wonderfully over the top baby grand nested in a curving table which was embedded with what looked like red Christmas lights, that served as the centrepiece of the main dining room. The furniture was solid, and in general, the place was marked by a flair for the dramatic that still remained elegant, from the heavy wooden doors at the entrance, to the carpeting, the pristine dance floor and the black and white table cloths. Someone mentioned an odd smell--there was a propane or gas order (very slight) at the entrance, but the main restaurant didn't have any such problems. We found the service prompt and friendly. We asked about their specialty and they said it was the grilled meat platters (meat or seafood), which is a typical Argentinean preparation. After a brief debate (we feared that it would be just way too much food), we decided that if this was their top item, we should try what they consider is best before judging. We also started with the empanadas, because I've had a few really good ones in my time (made, in one case by a friend from Argentina and in another by a woman in Vancouver who caters them for takeout--or did at one time. She did them Chilean-style) and some decent ones. I'm always in search of a repeat of those really delicious versions, however. The empanadas here came close. The pastry was flaky and melt-in-your mouth (unlike the Empanada Company, whose pastry to me tastes kind of generic and dry) and the stuffing (egg, olive, and beef) was delicious. The home-made salsa added a good amount of moisture (without it empanadas in general can be dry--even the ones from that great spot in Kensington Market). Yum! We went for the meat platter for two (and ended up with a ton of leftovers--this is a ridiculous amount of food) and found that delicious too. The Filet Mignon was all it should be (with a delicious sauce on the side); chorizo was spicy and delicious; pork tenderloin had some delicious rub on it; and the chicken breast was also lovely. I sampled a little of each (except the Filet, which I had in its entirety while it was warm and lovely). The only meat that I found disappointing and a little fatty was the lamb. Otherwise, excellent. Admittedly, it wasn't super busy (we came early in the evening, just a bit after five)--there were maybe two other people there at the time--but the service was friendly and pleasant. It was expensive enough that I wouldn't make a regular habit of going, but given that a beef filet alone is usually around the $30 mark each, a platter that includes good beef filets, 2Xs chicken, pork, sausage etc. for two, well-prepared, at $84 isn't bad at all. We didn't have space for dessert, so alas, I cannot comment on that...
