  • Full disclosure, and I'm sure warranting a "filtered" review, I've known the owners of the Fly for a lot of years (Backstage, anyone else this old?). They've been in the biz for a long time now, and it's evident at this bistro. This is a very relaxed, easy-going little place that has a lot going for it. The patio area is great with our year-round climate, inside is spacious enough, homey decor. I've only been there 4 times in the past year they've been open (this incarnation, I had not been to the previous Dragonfly), but have each time really enjoyed my meal. The first visit was a deja vu-inducing lahvosh (recommend the Dragonfly Special, add green chile; there could be more green chile heat for me, jalapenos maybe but not what I'm looking for here; just hotter green chile). Who doesn't like that dofino cheese? Second visit was Fernando's chicken sandwich, nice orzo salad; chicken was moist and spicy, and the jack was ok but you could probably ask for dofino again. Visit 3 was early evening, again with that patio! Nice. They had just started serving dinner, and the menu was more limited, burgers, sandwiches, salads and new desserts. The signature burger was excellent, properly cooked, beefy cheesy oniony bacony goodness. 4 napkin rating. Orzo again. I was last there for dinner again on "Dine Out For Life" night, a benefit for HIV/AIDS care and research, to which the Fly donated a percentage of their proceeds for the entire day. (There they go again, doing good things for their community...) Lahvosh with herbed butter on the table almost instantly. Soup du jour was a beautiful red roasted garlic, red pepper and tomato, very good; special salad of baby greens and lots of other add-ins with goat cheese. My entree was the night's fish special, fried tilapia with a side of ratatouille-like fresh vegetable medley. I enjoyed them both very much, though a different plating arrangement might have kept the fish a little crisper on the bottom. A smooth mustard sauce accompanied. The other guy let me taste his Hard Apple Cider Pot Roast, grilled asparagus, and au gratin squash; good seasoning, melting beefy protein, non-squishy vegetables done al dente, all "very good" directly quoted. Marinated all natural Red Bird roasted chicken breast tastes supplied by another friend nearby, and I completely loved that dish as well. They can create a nicely seasoned moist chicken breast, not an easy task for a lot of kitchens. I've tried and liked all of the dessert menu at one time or another, though not a huge apple fan, I loved the others. Very sweet for the most part, which is fine by me but maybe others will need some gelato to cut the sweetness. That was not a problem with the dessert special last time, a mocha cake with deep chocolate ganache and gelato. Great finish. I have not been to the restaurant for breakfast yet, but the menu looks interesting, especially that banana's foster french toast dessert I mean entree. Water and beverages served promptly and refilled often, I'm an iced tea addict and their's has good tea flavor. Wine and full bar available if you want. Some great wine specials offered usually and there's a happy hour. Sure, I know the owners. Sure, I wish I could get there more often, but it's about 15 miles OW. But I also dine out a lot, and compared to all of those, the Fly's got it together. They try to find local food sources, quality and organic ingredients, creativity and even wholesomeness and nutritive value on their evolving menu. Jene and Ann are great people with terrific children out there living the American Dream. They care about their community and are employing some great staff. They'll get to know and treat you as family after a couple of visits, which is really what those neighborhood places are all about. There's good value and really good food on their menu, so Yay! I'm a fan is right.
