| - I was in town and my mom wanted to come here due to the great things she has heard about this place! I double checked on my trusty Yelp app (as usual) and the reviews here were favorable.
We arrived during lunch hour on a weekday, and it was a nice day so we decided to sit outside. The place is not that big, but the restaurant is full of character inside.
I ordered Chicken Wings as an appetizer... ummm that was definitely a given! For my main course, I ordered Mert's Famous Salmon Cakes with Mac and Cheese and Green Beans as the fixins. My mom had Fried Catfish, along with Collard Greens and some other fixin I can't remember.
So let me dish on my dishes. The Chicken Wings were delivered nice and hot, crispy but lacking in flavor. The Salmon Cakes had a decent presentation, did not have a strong fishy taste, but they were super salty, I couldn't finish more than a few bites. The macaroni and cheese... well it was mostly cheese and not much macaroni. I think they gave me the top layer. The green beans were delicious. They were well seasoned and flavorful. I left
And service was lacking as well... the server was friendly, but service was slow and it was not that busy... my water stayed empty and we waited a little too long for the check. It was like we were outside and forgotten *sad face*, so I had to ask another waitress to find our server to bring us the check.
So overall, I was super disappointed with our lunch at Mert's. We were underwhelmed and the food was overpriced. I'm from Charlotte so I know of many other places to find great soul food, so I probably won't return.
Note: If you do decide to try this place on your own, check Groupon or Living Social as I saw them listed on one of these services so you can get a good deal on your meal.
