  • You have to be here to fully appreciate this unique art experience for reading about it does just not do it justice. Therefore, we proceeded to take our out-of-town guests here with us to explore together for the first time. And explore, we did. We are 2-years new to Pittsburgh and this was the first time venturing into this part of Pittsburgh's Northside called the Mexican War Streets (named after the Mexican-American war that ended about the time these streets were designed/named). You start your journey by parking on the street (free) and entering Randyland's courtyard. You may be greeted by Randy Gilson himself; we had the pleasure of his company that day on a Saturday afternoon. He greeted us warmly and loudly with as much energy as the Energizer Bunny, recounting how this all came about. His story is that this was a blighted neighborhood and he purchased his first building in the mid 1990's for roughly 10k placed on a credit card. From there, he painted murals on the sides of buildings, and decorated and painted all types of objects within the courtyard. Take a look at the photos but come see for yourself for a very uplifting experience. Seriously, this is such an uplifting experience that will surely put a goofy smile on your face as you look around you, taking in all the colorful, whimsical displays and murals. It is free but Randy takes donations you can place in a box at the entrance. Note: This is just a few blocks from City of Asylum's painted houses and next to that is the Mattress Factory Museum, all doable within a few hours and well worth the trip.
