| - Macaron Day TO
I have evaluated macarons from the following establishments: Petit Thuet, Bobbette and Belle, Daniel et Daniel, Butter Avenue, Nadege, Moroco Chocolat, Ruelo Patisserie, and La Bamboche. Each location was graded on their atmosphere, service, selection, packaging, and of course, macarons. Please check out my profile for reviews of the other locations.
Daniel et Daniel
Location: 248 Carlton St. (On the corner of Carlton and Parliament, take streetcar eat from College Station). Slightly off the beaten path in downtown Toronto. Street parking available.
Atmosphere: No sit down, tiny little bakery shop right on the corner. Dark interiors.
Selection: Small with many of the macarons being brightly and unnaturally coloured. Many rows of differing shades of colour but we were told they were the same flavours.
Service: Service was okay, friendly staff behind the counter but they were unknowledgeable about their macaron flavours.
Packaging: I asked for a little box to put my two macrons and was given an adorable little "boxy-bag". Perfect size and rigid enough to put in your purse without crushing the product!
Macaron: Having heard lovely things about Daniel et Daniel's catering and lunches, looked forward to trying their macarons but was highly disappointed. First of all, the flavour was simply orange, not blood orange. Secondly, both the orange and pistachio macarons I had were inconsistently made. Parts of the innards were soft, but other parts were chewy and gave me the "peanut butter on the roof of your mouth" texture. The shell of both were visably bumpy, an indication that their flour was not ground enough or not strained enough. The flavour of the orange was too strong, while the pistachio was too light. Each macaron was tiny and cost $1.50 each. Now I know why.
Conclusion: I do not think I would go out of my way to Daniel et Daniel, and certainly not for their macarons. Though I would not intentionally avoid them, the experience was not a particularly impressive one.
I give Daniel et Daniel a C.
My final thoughts: Out of all the macarons and locations I've tried (and ensuring to cleanse my palette with water after each bite), the top two contenders have to be Ruelo and Butter Avenue. Both establishments made macaroons their specialty and both execute them incredibly well. You honestly cannot go wrong with either of them. Nadege is a good alternative and if you're looking for a dine-in experience to try other nibblets. La Bamboche is nice on the go. Moroco Chocolate and Bobbette and Belle are also both worthy choices. I would avoid Daniel et Daniel or Petit Thuet though I heard good things about their other ventures and products (macarons are definitely not their forte).
