  • Years ago when TQM (Total Quality Management) and Stephen Coveys' 7 Habits of Highly Effective People created a management style that encompassed the whole system, down to the last person and patient. It is quite apparent that AGH's management teams, including physicians and nurses, missed the train, big time. I'm a good judge of hospital performance since I've been chronically ill for 47 years, spent 25 satisfying career years in healthcare administration and even married a physician. I've been in far too many hospitals. Places that do it right and places that don't. AGH is latter. My last visit was Feb 2018. I was transferred from another hospital so I could be closer to my long time physicians at AGH. Even though I had signed paperwork stating that I only wanted to be treated by my physician and his/her PA and not by the slew of minnows that follow them around, AGH just blew off one of many of my patients rights. I was admitted and was seen by the "hospitalists" who drew the last straw for weekend work. He was polite, went over what was what, asked about pain mgmt and put together a holding pattern till Monday. *FYI:Ive worked with Dr. V with the AGH pain mgmt team for about 20 years. I live with chronic pain and severe Crohn's disease and had just been told my CT scan showed that I also had Colitis. I was pretty stressed and in tons of pain) Monday, in the comes the"hospitalist" and when he did not even inquire about my health like, gee you're potassium is about 2, or where is the pain or how can I help, nope. He immediately wanted to lower my pain medication the day of and directly after I was to have several invasive tests. I am a patient of their own Pain Mgmt program and he never took the time to consult with them. If he had, they would've told him, I have had an excellent relationship with them for 20 yrs, I was not an addict and I was in serious pain. As I sat on my bed sobbing, that hospitalist doctor said,"Look, I'll even increase your dosage if you go off your IV Pain meds." I felt like I was on "Let's make a deal" with my pain. I was mortified. I didn't go out and make up an entire illness so I could get high while they jammed literally, jammed a tube down my nose three times, took 2 CT scans and a endo/colonoscopy all of which clearly showed I was inflamed and ulcerated throughout my entire digestive system! My daughter finally called the outside agency that family members can call if they believe their loved one is not being treated correctly. Thank God for her! All of a sudden, a nice woman, maybe supervisor of some kind came to call. At the same time I called my own dr at AGH and he took instant action to put into place what I desperately needed. After that happened, whenever I went for a walk, I got dirty looks from the nurses in their fishbowl. I was stressed, so sick and wanted to just be treated with divinity and professionalism. There's more but I think you get the picture. If you end up there, do what you need to do, then leave and get checked in at a different hospital. Your life could depend on it.
