  • People enjoy a memorable meal. I usually do too. But not this time because I will never forget how terrible Union Station Taphouse is. Located in the Wolfman`s Pub space in Marda Loop Union Station Taphouse should occupy that of the former, a comfortable neighbourhood pub. We walked in to the pub side to be blasted by the 1st Flames game of the season. The volume so loud it was actually like being at the hockey game. I enjoy watching hockey games but I don`t expect I have to shout across the table to make conversation So, we went to the restaurant side and were promptly seated. The server immediately offered us glasses of water and we perused the drink menu. The draft choices are unispired (grasshopper being the only mircobew on tap) but the bottle choices are a little better. Settling on $5.95 pint of Creemore and $7.25 for a pint of Hoegaarden we ordered crab cakes for $12.50. The 3 crab cakes arrived and were a decent size but flavourless. The chiptole aioli was likewise, as it lacked any form of heat. Ditto the vegetable garnish of raw cucumber and green peppers. During this, we noticed the Hoegaarden was completely flat. For a premimum pint, you had better know how it pours, obviously this was beyond the bar`s ability. Our mains arrived, this was where everything fell apart. My chicken burger, which interestingly featured maple hot sauce, was burnt. Due to said hot sauce burning on the grill and rendering the chicken the consistency of a rubber ball. To literally top it off the top of the bun had finger marks *in* it from where the kitchen staff had grabbed before they plated it. Finally, the onion ring side (a $2 option) were obviously pre-made/packaged and freezer burned. That makes for $14.50 of ruined food. My girlfriend`s salmon was also overcooked, although a little more tolerably. The grilled mushroom side and seasonable vegetables choice of asparagus (just asparagus, better make that seasonable vegetable) were decent. We both had the option to use the washrooms as well: Men`s: an old, drunk man was doing groin stretches on the bathroom sink counter ``because it was a hockey game`` and the game was so loud in the bathroom speakers he had to yell at me to get his point across when he saw the shocked look on my face. Women`s: The women`s room plays news broadcasts (because women don`t like hockey) just as loudly as the hockey game in the men`s. So, my girlfriend was treated to a high-decible recount of a violent rape on the news feed. My chicken burger was stricken from the bill completely and the server apologize profusely for the errors. I should also mention that there were 3 servers for *both* the bar and restaurant and they were run off their feet. This is a bad system because the servers work much harder then normal but make bad tips because of the lack of ``service``. Translation: the management didn`t have the where-with-all to schedule an extra server on the 1st hockey game of the season. Or help them run their food. There are many options in Marda Loop. This isn`t one of them.
