| - I went to Bug & Weed Mart on the advice of a neighbor who had a termite issue. I met with the manager, who was affable and had some good knowledge, I bought the termiticide (Taurus SC) for $300 and went about drilling my house and preparing. I was unclear on the application direction, so I went on-line to get help, I am glad I did! I found that there were dozens of sellers that had the product I had bought at Bug & Weed Mart for $300 for $170 - $190! I went back to the store, showed the manager several prices for the Taurus SC. At first he said "sorry, I can't help you" which led to a heated discussion about how he can't make a profit if he lowers the price. He became red faced and replied that "they are selling old stock that is no good, the termiticide they have won't work because it isn't fresh, and that it probably has been in the warehouse for years. I offered to pay him $215 for it because he is a local merchant, he refused, then wanted to offer me 10% off and $30 in store credit. I refused, and to his credit he refunded me in whole.
Later that day, I called the company that makes Taurus SC and asked about how long the product is good for, they said it is good for 5 years, and that the product is new, they only started selling it 13 months ago. I found a local distributor through the manufacturer's website, called them and explained the situation. They laughed about the "old" product claim, saying they can barely keep it on the shelf, and confirmed that it is a fairly new product. I bought the product for $155 and it was shipped to me the next day. When I opened the box, I found that the lot number for this bottle of Taurus SC was the exact same as the "new" product that Bug & Weed Mart had sold me earlier, except this one was 49% less expensive.
If Bug & Weed Mart wants to charge you nearly double what other retailers do, so be it, but I sure am not going to pay a confiscatory price for the exact same thing, and be told a bogus story about the product or their competitors. (BTW, the neighbor had no idea he paid double for the same product, he will not be going back to Bug & Weed Mart either.)
(added on November 1, 2012) The owner's reply doesn't change the fact that they were charging $300 for the exact same thing that I bought, locally for half the price. I received the exact same instructions on how to do the termite control from the manufacturer of the Taurus SC product as what I was told in the store. And a note, the person at the store snidely told me that "You will be back, because you are going to screw it up!", well, I don't have any termites any more, so I must have done something right.....
