  • I debated writing a review because I didn't want to give three stars (even if there's nothing wrong with "A-OK") to a place where a) the people are incredibly friendly, b) the soda selection is delightful, and c) the concept is cool. But, since I'm never going back again, I guess I need not take the path of the sheepish. Like I said, great people in the store. The customers seemed nice, too. (Although the people at the table right next to the crepe station were annoyed that I had to keep standing near them to read the menu. Not a great spot for a table.) A group of people stopped us before we went inside and raved - raved! - about how we had to try the pulled pork (I think it was) crepe. So, I get that this place has big fans, and I may just be the oddball. (My loss.) A variety of neat bottled sodas stands ready in the big fridge, and if you aren't a member of the Secret Ginger Beer Club who already knows where to get The Very Best Ginger Beer in Town, good news: they sell it here. Ask for a stumpy brown bottle of brewed Bundaberg ginger beer and prepare to walk among the initiated. (But, once you're hooked, I recommend buying it when it's on sale at Cost Plus World Market - as far as I know, the only other place here that sells it.) I love that there's a selection of both sweet and savoury crepes served with your choice of soup and side salad at a reasonable price. I also think it's clever how a camera points down at the preparation area, so you can watch your crepes being prepared. Neat-o. Where everything falls apart for me, though, is the taste. My husband and I both ordered savoury crepes. I got the caprese, one of the two vegetarian options. (The other has hummus, which I wasn't ready to try in a crepe yet. I really wanted something kind of traditional with cheese and was disappointed that the caprese with mozzarella, a slow melter, was my only vegetarian option.) I've eaten quite a few crepes, both sweet and savoury, since the first French Club field trip back in junior high. I've never eaten them in Paris, granted, but in 30+ years of crepe-eating around the country, I always experienced two constants until visiting Crepe Expectations: 1. The crepe itself tasted like something nice in its own right. 2. The finished crepe was not indistinguishable from a wrap sandwich. Looking at reviews here, and judging by the other customers when I was in CE, I guess mine is the minority opinion. (My husband is also in this minority - I suppose we're lucky we found each other.) I'm happy for the rest of you that you can find joy in crepes three inches high. (Okay, looking at photos here I can see that some people have had more sensibly sized crepes, but ours were huge. I felt like it was 1998 and I was getting a two-handed wrap at the Sonic Drive-Thru.) But even if my crepe had been assembled with a finer touch, not only was the crepe itself completely tasteless and acting only as a wrapper, but the flavors inside were only "A-OK." I couldn't even smell the basil inside my caprese (although that could be because the pesto overwhelmed everything else). I applaud the idea of Crepe Expectations, and they're probably a great option from the usual if you're working in the area and want something different for lunch, but the next time I'm specifically hungry for melty, herby, toasty, savoury crepes, I'll head for the Strip instead.
